AMD has made arrangements to acquire World Labs, the company founded by AI researcher Dr. Fei-Fei Li, in a transaction that is valued at approximately $8.2 billion. This deal implies that AMD will now have its own research team working on frontier models, and this will help the company move deeper into the realm of AI and beyond the mere provision of processors.
Buying the research, not just the customers
World Labs creates spatial intelligence models that generate, reconstruct, and simulate interactive 3D environments based on text, images and videos. Once the deal is closed, Li will take up the role of executive vice president and chief scientist at AMD, reporting to the company’s CEO, Lisa Su. The deal is expected to be finalized by the end of 2026, once all regulatory approvals are received.
The two firms are already familiar with one another’s operations. According to Reuters, World Labs raised $1 billion earlier this year through a funding round that included AMD. Li mentioned that the company has been utilizing AMD GPUs in its model training and optimization processes.
“Fei-Fei and the World Labs team bring exceptional research leadership and model expertise,” Su said in AMD’s announcement.
What spatial intelligence gives AMD
At the center of World Labs’ work is Atlas, a model they launched on September 1. World Labs describes it as an omni-world model they have created from scratch to understand text, images, video, and 3D within the same spatial framework.
Atlas can be used for camera-controlled video generation, reconstructing 3D scenes, and running simulations for robotics. Those tasks ask more from computing systems than a typical chatbot does. This gives AMD useful insight on how to design its next generation of chips, software, and AI systems.
An answer to Nvidia that spans the whole stack
The deal also demonstrates that AMD is determined to compete in a wider segment of the AI infrastructure market besides just semiconductor products. It was reported previously that Microsoft intends to deploy AMD’s Helios rack-scale AI system. A few days later, AMD announced that it was ready to inject about $5 billion into the Anthropic project, allowing for the supply of up to 2 GW of Instinct MI450 GPUs.
Nvidia still commands the lion’s share of the data-center GPU market. According to Futurum Group, it makes up more than 95% of the market compared to AMD’s mere 4.5%. Analyst Daniel Newman believes AMD may reach 20-25% of the market, but that is an external estimate rather than a forecast from AMD.

Why the timing works in AMD’s favor
The deal comes as AI spending keeps climbing. Gartner forecasts worldwide AI spending will hit $2.7 trillion in 2026, up 49.5% year over year. IDC says AI infrastructure spending reached $89.7 billion in the first quarter and could hit $497 billion for the full year.
According to PwC, $31.6 trillion is expected to be invested cumulatively in AI infrastructure by 2050, while TrendForce expects the total 2026 capex of the leading nine cloud vendors across the world to reach $886.7 billion.
